The view from the Sheraton in Anchirage helps understanding the light during the nights in Alaska?
We have used the day to plan for the start. Anything in town appears to be at a distance of a mile: the centre of town from our b&b, the extension of downtown, the distance between the station and the centre and at least the distance between the b&b and the stores. We need to decide how much rice, noodles, dry meet, biscuits etc we need… I listen to my friends, but i have a feeling that i will eat less than usual. Of course i’m not here for the food! We got the satellite phone and the wish list for he food, so tomorrow we will go back to the store.
Yesterday it was a very very very long day. We started at 1.30 am from Collagna, through Roncadelli and Vezzano we reached Bologna airport. Dapo smiled and most of the excess weight was let through… The power of a smile…
After 20 hours we landed in Anchorage, left all our fingerprints in the database and had 15 minutes of “problems” since we could not find the bag with the tents and some of the gear! Some guy took the bag thinking it was his!!!
He came back and we left before Ruffo thought of closing the guy inside his own bag for a close inspection of the details. I have to admit that the guy must have been really tired to exchange his grey bag for our black bag… Jet lag is tough sometimes, but we had all the luggage so we left happy on a taxi driven by a Mexican who ha d an idea where Reggio Emilia is because it is close to Maranello and the Ferrari.
We are staying at a lovely b&b, see pictures, had a stroll in Anchorage to reach a decent time for dinner and went to sleep after 27 hours from the start. The city is small, the crab is the local speciality and we will make sure to test it before leaving. We are all looking forward to be on Denali and climb!
After 20 hours and a long long way we made to anchorage.
As usual at the last minute we are collecting everything we will need on Denali, we are packing it, weighting it and trying to figure out how to carry all the load up the 4,000 m to the summit!
We can count only on ourselves there, so it is essential to be ready.
We are looking forward to the departure, but we are trying not to leave anything unfinished behind. However in the early morning of the 22nd we will focus on ourselves, searching for the strength to reach the summit and be closer to the sky.
Tonight at 8.30 pm we will be in Collagna to describe the climb and how we plan to descend.
Even if you try to reduce the load, the load is always a lot… Getting ready at Roncadelli.
Following the Chooyu2008 and Gasherbrum2011 expeditions, we now are now entering the Denali2012 expedition and we want you to be part of our efforts and emotions. We want to share with you our adventure on Mount McKinley, either if you are at home, working or travelling.
You can check the expedition on this website, on Facebook or on Twitter. We apologise if you are not high-tech, but pigeons cannot fly due to the low temperatures, which reach -32 to -40 degrees C. I’m cold just by translating it…
